Richy isn’t new to riding; Leading tours in the French mountains, building wheels, leaving it all on the road for his teammates, his relationship with bikes goes way back. Through the years, he learned a lot about what he likes, and what works for him – and a custom frame set would tie all of it together.
Richy’s position on the bike is naturally very aggressive, which we didn’t shy away from.
I picked a mix of Columbus HSS and Life steel, for stiffness, comfort and weight. A 44mm head tube and Columbus’ brand new Futura Calliper forks to complete the frame set. One for long days in the Alps, as well as on punchy crits and road races.
The build was straight to the point. In Richy’s words, ‘quality components that are not too extravagant’. Shimano Ultegra drivetrain with rotor cranks, Absolute Black chainrings, Thomson stem and seat post, TRP brakes and Cats Whiskers Wheels 30mm alloy clinchers wheel set… oh, and gold cables, skewers and bottle cage bolts for a splash of eye-catching colour.
And that blue. Applied by Cole Coatings Workshop in a two step process, the frame is first painted in a flat blue, then coated in translucent ink – cranking up the intensity of the colour to the next level. Proving that a strong graphic intention and a clever process are plenty enough for a paint job to stand out.
